Contemporary speckled calf, red leather titled label affixed to spine, spine titled and ornamented in gilt. Title continues, 'Translated from the Last Edition, (as Published by Dr. Reichard) of the Genera Plantarum, and of the Mantissae Plantarum of the Elder Linnaeus; and from the Supplementum Plantarum of the Younger Linnaeus, with all the New Families of Plants, from Thunberg and L'Heritier' etc. Good. Upper joint heavily worn, moderate rubbing to extremities, some light scuffing and rubbing to covers. Some very light foxing throughout, though the paper is quite good. Ex-library, with stamp to title page, p. 387, endpapers, all edges; with pocket at rear. Binding square and tight.
Zeuxian Society (Caldwell Institute) bookplate to front pastedown, with the motto nunc adbibe puro pectore verba (Hor. Ep. 1.2.67 'now drink up words with a bright, undefiled mind'). The Caldwell Institute, named after Joseph Caldwell, the first president of the University of North Carolina, was a short-lived, early 19th-century Presbyterian school in North Carolina designed to provide a classical education imbued with Christian principles. Scarce.
